Legal Aid of Napa Valley provides free bilingual legal advice and representation to immigrants and their families, regardless of immigration status, on a variety of immigration-related legal issues, including:
- Naturalization
- Family visa petitions
- Obtaining legal permanent residence (green cards)
- Protections under the Violence Against Women Act
- Trafficking and Crime Victim Visas (T and U Visas)
- Special Immigrant Juvenile Status
- Asylum
Legal Aid also provides legal advice to immigrants, regardless of immigration status, on non-immigration-related legal issues, including:
- Housing and landlord/tenant concerns
- Domestic violence
- Employment discrimination
- Civil rights
- Consumer problems
Immigrants with non-immigration legal issues may use our Baseline and Senior programs as appropriate. All three programs provide Spanish-speaking advocates and translators.
Legal Advice Clinics
Free clinics are held regularly at St. John’s Catholic Church, farmworker camps, the Calistoga Family Center, the St. Helena Family Center, the American Canyon Family Resource Center, and other locations throughout the Valley convenient for individuals and families in need. People seeking legal advice may attend a clinic to consult with an attorney or legal advocate free of charge. We recommend contacting Legal Aid before attending a clinic to confirm the time and place of the clinic and to schedule an appointment.
Immigrant Children’s Outreach Project
Through this project, Legal Aid trains local service providers to identify undocumented immigrant children in Napa County who, because they are victims of abuse, neglect or abandonment, may be eligible for legal permanent residence in the United States. Legal Aid provides the legal representation necessary for eligible immigrant children to obtain legal immigration status at no cost to the children. Contact us for more information.
Immigration Law Forums
We also educate the Napa community at large about immigration-related legal issues at immigration law forums. (To see article on a forum, click here.)
Eligibility
Services are available to immigrants residing in Napa County regardless of race, sex, sexual orientation, age, religion, disability, family status, or national origin. To be eligible for legal assistance under the Immigrant Legal Services Program, clients may not have a total annual income of more than a certain percentage of the poverty level set by the federal government. When first contacting Legal Aid, clients will be asked certain question about their income and assets, family size and residency to assess whether income and residency requirements are met. Legal rules also require us to screen for any conflicts of interest prior to providing legal advice and/or representation. All information we collect from clients is confidential.
The Immigrant Legal Services Program is made possible by grants from Auction Napa Valley, United States Department of Justice/Legal Assistance Program, and van Loben Sels/Rembe Rock Foundation.
